We believe in the spirit of a listening room, where audiences and artists share in the vibrations of creative exchange and, hopefully, experience a sense of transcendence and deeper connection. Our series of events aim to showcase a community rich with stories of all art forms, in the quest to thread the needle of our shared humanity, bring together disparate populations, and inspire a ripple effect of creativity beyond our own four walls.

UPCOMING EVENTS + GATHERINGS
Join us for an intimate evening of connection and creativity as former Story Parlor Artist-in-Residence Shunyu Huang hosts a roundtable conversation and collaborative performance with guests from Asheville’s BIPOC community, celebrating the “five flavors of life” and the shared threads of humanity.
Becomyth: We Begin in Chaos (Night 1) | In The Book of Invocation, Story Parlor’s 2025 Artists-in-Residence Adam J. N. Keene and Langston Kelly open their mythic trilogy exploring the challenge and necessity of beginnings by unfolding two creation myths set against a world on the brink of collapse.
Wandering bards Mica Sun and Samara Jade bring a uniquely original (and yet ancient and familiar) marriage of oral storytelling and finely crafted song in “The Floating Kingdom,” a musical and theatrical tale of reflection, journey and return.
Becomyth: We Begin in Chaos (Night 2) | For the second evening of the 2025 Story/Arts Residency, The Book of Convocation, artists-in-residence Adam J. N. Keene and Langston Kelly blend ancient and new myths into a ritualistic performance that reflects on transformation, reckoning, and the possibilities born from chaos.
Enjoy an evening of mind blowing entertainment that will leave your jaw on the floor. It’s 70 minutes of highly interactive experiences that you won’t believe. Limited seating. 18+ please.
“Sonic Shadows” brings to life the timeless romance between Emperor Wu of Han (Liu Che, 141 BC–87 BC) and his beloved concubine, Lady Li. After Lady Li’s passing, a courtier’s shadow puppet play comforted the grieving emperor, becoming his favorite pastime. Witness masterful puppetry from Hobey Ford’s masterful, evocative music composed and performed by Min Xiao-Fen, and captivating soundscapes from Zack Page.
Becomyth: We Begin in Chaos (Night 3) | Join the final iteration in the 2025 Story/Arts residency, Adam J. N. Keene and Langston Kelly lead audiences through a lyrical, dreamlike journey where forgotten myths awaken through the perspective of a child, inviting reflection on creation and renewal.

Friday, August 22 | MULTI-VITAMIN : Story, Songs & Improv is a multi-genre bill of storytellers, songwriters and comedians who enjoy absurd, moving and poetic commentary on the beauty and despair all around us.

Poetry and music are perhaps the two art forms that draw most deeply from this inner silence as they transform it into song. Tonight we will hear examples of these transformations in the poetry of Michael Hettich (A Sharper Silence), Eric Nelson (Horse Not Zebra), Mildred Barya (The Animals of My Earth School) and in the haunting, unique, and beautiful music of Elysian Studios.

A variety of free and donation-based workshops, events, and gatherings dedicated to building an accessible creative community.
Held each summer, the Story/Arts Residency exists to champion the creative work of locally based artists hailing from historically marginalized communities in the quest to amplify and bridge the diverse fabric of voices in Asheville.
Please note we are an unconventional arts venue in that we do not solicit booking and our space is completely community-programmed (either through community rentals, or event proposals, the latter being exclusively offered for local acts). Due to the influx of messages we receive, we will not respond to emails requesting us to book solo music acts or review press kits. We kindly ask that any artists interested in performing at our space follow the proper protocol with the below forms.
